When the MP3 standard was published in 1995, it did not include a method for storing file metadata. In ID3v2, an extensible set of "frames" located at the start of the file are used. In ID3v1, the metadata is stored in a 128- byte segment at the end of the file. There are two unrelated versions of ID3: ID3v1 and ID3v2. It competes with the APE tag in this arena. ID3 is a de facto standard for metadata in MP3 files no standardization body was involved in its creation nor has such an organization given it a formal approval status.

When I’m finally done in a few months though, I’m going to have a 400 gig library of personally curated tracks, and each one will have my ideas of categories attached rather than someone else’s, and that will make searchability and usability light years beyond anything auto tagged by someone or something else. I’m finally doing all my non house/techno stuff after 15 years, and I’m a month into it with months of work ahead. Going through one by is very cumbersome and clunky. Vice verse, it might not fit in with MY set of Soulful house if left alone. IE - if a song is categorized as soulful house, but to me, it’s has more of a gospel house feel, the technically correct metadata is useless since it won’t come up when I’m searching for songs to play in a gospel house part of a set. My view for the last few years has been that what is officially “right” means nothing if I’m not going to automatically interpret it as that.
